HOW THE GHOST PROTECTS YOUR RANGE ROVER

It talks to the Range Rover over the vehicle's own data network and requires a personal sequence, entered using buttons already in the cabin, before the engine will start or the car will move. WHICH BUTTONS YOUR SEQUENCE USES

Nothing new is added to the cabin. Your sequence is built from controls the Range Rover already has and already reports over its data network — typically the multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, the media and volume controls, the climate panel, the electric window and mirror switches, or the cruise and drive-mode controls. On L405 and L494 Sport cars the steering-wheel controls are the most natural combination; on Velar and Evoque models the window and climate switches are often used instead.

• Relay attack: the key's signal is picked up through a front door or window and repeated to the car on the driveway
• OBD key programming: entry is forced at a door or through the windscreen surround, then a blank key is coded at the diagnostic port
• CAN injection: a wing, headlight or bumper is opened to reach the vehicle's wiring and send a false unlock and start message
• Key theft: keys taken during a burglary or at a gym, restaurant or fuel station
• Part-stripping: lights, wheels, bumpers and seats hold high value and are targeted even on older models
• Convoy theft: the car is driven a short distance, left to see whether it is tracked, then collected later
